What to Do if You Have a Fluid Leak

If you ever notice any fluid leaking from your vehicle, you should be concerned. Some leaks are minor and relatively harmless. Some leaks are signs of major damage that should be addressed as soon as possible. You never know for sure until you identify the source of the leak and how bad any damage might be. It could just be a loose fluid line connection or worn seal/gasket. Or, it could be something much worse.

All vehicles have many different fluids. Here is what you should know if you see any of these fluids leaking from your car:

Fuel

Any leak of fuel (gasoline or diesel) can be extremely dangerous. You might have damage to your fuel tank, the fuel pump or one of the fuel lines. Whatever the problem, you want to get it fixed immediately!

Engine Oil

Probably the most common fluid leak is engine oil. Some leaks are fairly minor and may not be causing a huge problem other than a mess in your driveway. Sometimes, oil leaks are signs of much bigger issues. Either way, you shouldn't take an oil leak too lightly because low oil levels will eventually cause significant engine problems. Get your vehicle looked at by a professional mechanic to determine the source of the leak and the extent of any damage.

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid leaks are usually easy to identify with most ATFs being bright red in color, as well as the central location of the transmission under the vehicle. A light transmission fluid leak may just mean you are overdue for a transmission service and a new pan gasket and filter. Or, it could be something worse. Again, it's always best to get a leak inspected by an expert.

Radiator Coolant

A coolant leak could be coming from a cracked radiator or simply a loose/damaged hose or connection point in the cooling system. A lack of clean radiator coolant can lead to the car overheating, so you will want to address any noticeable leaks as soon as you can.

Power Steering Fluid

A leak of power steering fluid isn't going to affect the performance of your vehicle, but it can eventually make it harder to steer and that's not a good thing.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid provides hydraulic power to your brakes, which enables you to stop and slow down the car as needed. Obviously, a brake fluid leak is problematic and should be dealt with immediately.

The basic rule of thumb is that you shouldn't take any fluid leak lightly. It may not be a big deal, or it could be the sign of a serious problem.
