It’s been a beautiful summer in Northern Delaware. Fall is upon us and winter is just around the corner. As the weather begins to change, driver safety becomes more and more important. It’s a good idea to get your brakes, battery, fluids, wheels, belts and hoses inspected now, so they can be repaired or replaced as needed before the winter weather arrives.
Why You Need Good Tires
When it comes to safety, few things are as important as your tires. You want tires that grip the road and provide proper handling no matter what the weather conditions bring. If your tires are starting to go bald, it can be very dangerous to be on the road. You might have a blow out or lose traction when you need it most. Good tires that are inflated at proper pressure can even affect your gas mileage.
Needless to say, there are many reasons why you want your tires to be in good condition. You want to get them rotated regularly so that the tread wear is even. You may also want to get your wheel alignment checked, as that can also dramatically affect tread wear and the overall handling of your vehicle.
The Penny Test
One way to test the tread depth yourself is called the “penny test.” Take a penny, turn it upside down and stick it in the middle of your tire treads. Do this on each tire because the wear may not be even on all four tires. If there is any space between Mr. Lincoln’s head and the top of the tread, then it means your tires are getting dangerously low. Some say a quarter is an even more accurate measuring stick, but either coin will give you a general idea of your tread depth.
It’s also worthwhile to measure the tire pressure of each tire. Pressure gauges are inexpensive and you should probably always keep one in your glove compartment. If not, you can go to most any gas station and use the gauge found at the air/water station.
Fox Run Auto for Your Tires
If your tire treads are getting low or the tread wear is very uneven from tire to tire, bring your vehicle into Fox Run Auto. The same goes for if the tire pressure is unusually low. There could be a slow leak or damage that needs to be repaired. We’ll take a look and let you know exactly when your tires will need to be replaced. Sometimes, a simple rotation will be all that’s needed. In other cases, we may recommend replacing one or all the tires. Fox Run Auto can also perform brake inspections, tire pressure tests and wheel alignment checks to make sure your tires will last as long as possible.
