It’s been a really cold winter here in the Mid-Atlantic, and this kind of weather takes a toll on many of your car’s different systems. The cooling system is definitely put to the test when it’s so chilly outside.
Many people hear the term “cooling system” and think it only applies to keeping the engine from overheating in the warmer summer months. However, the radiator, coolant, water pump and other components of the cooling system also serve very important purposes during the winter season. It keeps the engine from seizing up and regulates the running temperature of the vehicle.
Therefore, it’s important to take care of your vehicle’s cooling system all year long. Fox Run Auto is here to help. Here are a few cooling system maintenance tips that you can follow:
1. Keep the Fluid Level Maintained
Radiator coolant (or antifreeze if you want to put it in winter terms) is just like any other fluid in your vehicle. It needs to be maintained at a proper level. You can check the radiator (when the car is off and completely cooled down) to see if the coolant level is where it needs to be. You can also check the quality of the fluid. If it looks dark/dirty or smells burned, it may be time to replace it.
2. Use the Right Water-to-Coolant Ratio
Most radiator coolants will come out of the bottle pre-mixed with water. However, colder weather often dictates a slightly different water-to-coolant ratio compared so warmer weather. Check your owner’s manual or consult with a mechanic to use the right mixture for your vehicle during the winter season.
3. Look for Coolant Leaks
Coolant leaks, especially in extreme weather, can be common. You can usually identify it pretty easily because it is bright yellow/green in color. Any fluid leak should be cause for concern and you will definitely want to get your vehicle looked at by an expert if it’s leaking antifreeze in the winter.
4. Maintain Your Belts, Hoses and Seals
Various timing belts, fluid-transporting hoses and housing seals are found throughout the cooling system. Being made of rubber and plastic, they will wear out over time and the cold weather can also cause them to fail. Make sure these components are replaced as needed to avoid major cooling system breakdowns.
5. Winterize Your Car and Get Your Cooling System Inspected
